What is an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists are dental specialists who focus on correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. They possess advanced knowledge and expertise in orthodontics, beyond what a general dentist provides.

With their specialised training and experience, orthodontists can effectively diagnose and treat various dental irregularities, including crooked teeth, overcrowding, and bite issues.

When visiting a Sydney orthodontist, you can expect a comprehensive examination of your teeth and jaws. They will utilise advanced diagnostic tools like X-rays and 3D imaging to create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Orthodontists employ a range of techniques to correct dental misalignments, including traditional braces, clear aligners, and other innovative appliances.

Apart from enhancing aesthetics; orthodontic treatment offers numerous oral health benefits. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Additionally, orthodontic treatment can improve your bite, alleviate jaw pain, and enhance overall facial symmetry.

How do aligners work?

With advancements in orthodontic technology and with beauty standards ever-evolving; clear aligners have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional braces. Although it is worth mentioning that traditional braces are still regarded as a fantastic teeth-straightening solution.

Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays that fit snugly over your teeth. They are designed to gradually shift your teeth into the desired position over time.

The process begins with a consultation with an orthodontist, who will assess your dental needs and create a digital treatment plan.

Then, using advanced 3D imaging technology, a series of aligners will be fabricated specifically for you. Each aligner is slightly different from the previous one, gradually applying gentle pressure to guide your teeth into the desired alignment.

How long does Invisalign take to fully straighten your teeth?

Typically, you will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks before moving on to the next set in the series. This continues for 12 - 18 months until the desired results have been achieved. Following this, the aligners can be removed and a clear retainer will be fit and needed to be worn to prevent your teeth from reverting back to their previous positions.

During the first 12 - 24 months, it is essential to wear the aligners for the recommended 20-22 hours a day for desired results. This includes the first 6 months of getting retainers after your treatment is complete. However, after this period, once advised by your orthodontist, you can start to wear your retainer for just 8 hours while you sleep instead.

While it is recommended that you never stop wearing your retainer to maintain optimal results, after a few years of proper use, in most cases, you can start to reduce the amount of time that your retainers are worn.

Why are clear aligners so popular?

One of the key advantages of clear aligners is their nearly invisible appearance. Made from transparent plastic material, they are much less noticeable than traditional braces, allowing you to straighten your teeth discreetly. Additionally, the aligners are removable, which means you can easily take them out for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene routines.

Clear aligners offer several other benefits as well. Since there are no wires or brackets involved, there is less likelihood of experiencing mouth irritation or discomfort. Furthermore, the absence of metal components allows for easier maintenance and oral hygiene, as you can brush and floss your teeth without obstruction.
